Affirmations have become a trend, but for believers, they hold a much deeper purpose. As a Christian life coach, I have seen many people use affirmations to chase dreams, yet forget to align those dreams with the divine purpose God has for them. The real power of affirmations begins when you understand who you are in Him. Affirmations are not about pretending or repeating feel-good quotes. They are about returning to the truth that God already spoke over your life. When used the right way, they help you align your heart, your mind, and your actions with His Word. Step 1: Know Who You Are and Whose You Are Before you can speak life, you must know the Source of that life. Ask yourself, “Who does God say I am?” The Bible says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart”(Jeremiah 1:5). This means your identity was confirmed long before you ever began to doubt it. When you speak affirmations rooted in His Word, you are not creating something new. You are agreeing with something eternal. Coaching Tip: Write down three affirmations that connect directly to scripture. For example, instead of saying, “I am strong,” declare, “I am strong in the Lord and in the power of His might” (Ephesians 6:10). Step 2: Get Real With Yourself You cannot affirm over what you refuse to face. Growth begins with honesty. Be transparent about your struggles, negative thoughts, pride, jealousy, or fear. Proverbs 28:13 says, “Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” True affirmation starts where pretense ends. You do not need to hide your mess from God. You just need to invite Him into it. Coaching Tip: Write down one area of your life that needs healing or surrender. Pair it with a truth from scripture that affirms God’s power in that area.
2 / 3 Step 3: Trade Defensiveness for Truth Affirmations only work when you are willing to receive truth. You cannot speak truth while rejecting it at the same time. When God highlights something that needs to change, He is not condemning you. He is cultivating you. Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32). Freedom begins where truth is accepted. Coaching Tip: The next time you feel corrected by God or someone close to you, instead of becoming defensive, ask “What truth might God be showing me here?” Step 4: Understand What Affirmations Are (and What They Are Not) Affirmations are not magic words. They do not make God your wish-granter. They are not a quick fix or a spiritual shortcut. Affirmations are agreements between your spirit and the Word of God. They train your heart to respond differently, to think higher, and to live in alignment with God’s purpose. Romans 12:2 says, “Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Renewal happens through repetition, reflection, and relationship with Him. Coaching Tip: Record your affirmations on your phone and listen to them each morning. Repetition builds belief. Step 5: Commit to the Practice Affirmations are not one and done. This is a lifestyle. You must speak life daily, especially on the days you feel empty or discouraged. When the enemy whispers lies, respond with truth. When your past reminds you of your failures, respond with scripture. When you feel unseen, remind yourself of what God sees in you. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Choose life every time. Coaching Tip: Create a morning affirmation routine. Speak five declarations each day that align with your faith and purpose. Step 6: Speak Life Into Others
3 / 3 Affirmations should extend beyond you. Your words carry weight and influence. Speak life into your children, your spouse, your friends, your associates and even your coworkers. But be careful not to affirm things that lead to destruction or self-centeredness. Speak words that empower others to walk in truth, grace, and accountability. Build atmospheres that reflect the heart of God. Coaching Tip: Each week, choose one person to affirm with a scripture or spoken encouragement. Watch how it shifts both of your spirits. Final Reflection Affirmations are not about becoming someone new; they are about becoming who you already are in Christ. Every time you speak truth over yourself, you remind your soul that you belong to a God who restores, redeems, and renews. So today, I challenge you: Speak truth. Speak light. Speak life. Because when you do, you are not just changing your language. You are changing your life.
