AFFIRMING YOUR YOUNGER SELF

AFFIRMING YOUR YOUNGER SELF

Affirming Your Younger Self: A Journey of Healing and Transformation

Have you ever taken a moment to reflect on your younger self? Picture her, maybe she’s in elementary school, walking down the neighborhood street. Perhaps she’s on her way to the corner store, to a cousin’s house, or even just to the bus stop. But in your mind’s eye, there’s one thing that stands out: her head is down. She isn’t looking around at the world with confidence. She isn’t seeing the beauty or strength that you now know she holds. Instead, she's walking through her world quietly, shyly, hiding the pain she feels within.

When I picture that younger version of myself, my heart aches. I can see her: introverted, insecure, and at times struggling. She fought silent battles, battles she couldn’t even fully understand yet. She lived through loss, abandonment, death of others and being picked on for things beyond her control, her dark skin, acne, and not having the trendy clothes just to name a few. She carried the burden of feeling invisible and less-than. I see that girl, and I understand her because I was her.

As a young girl, I had strong, loving examples in my life, including a praying grandmother. I am forever grateful for the strong women and faith that carried me through the hardest times, as well as protective male figures. Yet, there were things they couldn’t shield me from, things that would leave deep marks on me. I was too young to process them, but the impact they had on me was undeniable.

That’s why evolving, affirming, and leaning into God became my life’s foundation. If I hadn't committed to these three things beyond my childhood, I truly shudder to think of where I would be today. We may not have control over the challenges and struggles we face as children, but we do have control over how we heal, transform, and speak life into who we will become as adults.

The Power of Speaking to Your Younger Self

Have you ever wanted to speak to your younger self? To go back in time and tell that child everything you know now, everything she needed to hear back then but couldn’t understand?

As a coach, counselor, mentor, and mother, I’ve come to realize that many of us skip over the important step of affirming the child we once were. It’s easy to overlook this process, but I want to encourage you today to take a moment to speak to that younger version of yourself. It’s vital for your growth and healing.

As children, we couldn’t process the world in the same way we can as adults. We didn’t have the wisdom or tools to handle the emotional weight of life’s challenges. And because of that, we internalized hurtful things, things that shaped the false narratives we held about ourselves. But now, as the grown, wiser version of yourself, you have the power to step in. You can now defend that vulnerable child, the one who didn’t know how to block out the hurt or see herself clearly. You can now dispel the lies placed on you when you were too young to understand them. This is a critical part of growing into your purpose and stepping fully into who you were always meant to be. 3 Steps to Affirm and Heal Your Younger Self

1. Identify the Lies: Think about your childhood, what were the events or situations that impacted you the most? What words or actions made you feel less than, insecure, or unworthy? Now, take a step back and recognize the lies in those memories. What false narratives were placed on you that you can now dismantle with your adult wisdom? This is the beginning of healing, discerning the truth from the lies. 2. Affirm the Younger You: Imagine you are speaking directly to your younger self. How would you speak words of love, affirmation, and truth to the child who once felt unseen, unimportant, or unloved? What words of encouragement would you give her? This affirmation can be a powerful tool for restoring the broken places within. You are now the adult who can pour healing into those wounds. 3. Write a Letter to Your Younger Self: This is an intimate exercise that can bring incredible emotional release and healing. Write a letter to the child you once were. Let her know that despite the struggles, she will be okay. You, the adult, are here now to take up for her. Promise her that the hurt doesn’t define her and let her know that God’s love will carry her through. The struggles you faced have shaped you into the person you are today, and they give you the strength and empathy to help others in their journeys.

Embracing Our Past to Lead Others As we reflect on our past, we must understand that our struggles don’t define us; they shape us. They give us the wisdom, strength, and compassion needed to lead others. Our past prepares us to help others rise from the ashes of their pain, just as we did. This is why affirmation is so crucial. Speaking truth over our lives and embracing God’s healing power allows us to evolve and move forward in strength. God didn’t leave us in our pain; He is with us, guiding us toward greater understanding and purpose.

Let’s take a moment to embrace the child we once were, the one who carried so much weight. As we move forward, we carry that child’s heart with us. We protect her, we honor her, and we affirm that she is worthy of love, success, and joy. As you reflect, I encourage you to:

· Identify the impact of your childhood struggles · Affirm your younger self with love and kindness · Write a heartfelt letter to that child, promising her that she is loved, worthy, and enough

Remember, the process of healing and affirmation is a journey, but it’s one that we don’t have to walk alone. Together, as a community, we can evolve, affirm, and support one another, leaning into God’s grace as we move forward. --- Join the Conversation: Have you ever taken the time to affirm your younger self?
