African travels and sisterhood adventures
At the end of January into the first week of February, I was blessed to take a trip to a destination that I have dreamed of going to my entire life. I was invited on a birthday celebration to Johannesburg and Cape Town South Africa by a longtime friend. With the birthday girl, I journeyed with a group of 6 women, some I knew, some I didn’t, but we all had a friendship with the birthday girl in common. I was blessed to wake up to the bright African sunrise, experience the familial ties that knit my heart to the heart of its people; As well as connect with the most beautiful land I’ve seen, and partake in its resources. This trip was amazing! Yes, of course, the destination, and every activity was top tier, however what made the trip so amazing was how well each woman got along, shared information, pushed each other’s passion and were plain old easy to travel with. I had known and had a friendship with the birthday girl for somewhere around 20 years, I traveled with a close friend from San Diego who was only familiar with me, two of the ladies I had known from around the city I grew up in and by way of modeling, and three I had met for the first time. After spending a week with each of these ladies, I evolved in ways I did not and could not have predicted in such a short time. I’ve always considered myself a girl’s girl! I grew up close with my younger sister, a crew of sister-cousins, and some really good girlfriends. I am a sorority girl (shout out to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc), meeting and learning from women of all ages has always been important to me, and I love helping to grow women. I grew up seeing the importance of sisterhood modeled by my grandmother, aunts and women in my neighborhood. Whoever said that women don’t get along, has either not been in the right circle of women, has not given it a real chance, or has not been the right woman that loved to uplift and see other women win themselves. Connecting with each of the women in Africa did so much for me and reminded me that our joy, success and freedom as women and families is rooted in our shared sisterhood. So, cheers to, reflecting on my sisterhood experiences while Africa during this beautiful month of April.
