Back to School Affirmations: Building Routines & Raising Resilient Children

Latoya Glover As summer winds down and the school bells begin to ring, many of us are shifting gears: buying school supplies, resetting sleep schedules, and preparing our kids for the year ahead. But beyond backpacks and binders, there’s something even more powerful we can give our children: affirmation and emotional support. In our home, affirmations are not just cute sayings we post on mirrors, they’re daily reminders of who our children are and the greatness they carry within. Just as we adults seek encouragement and validation, our children need it too—maybe even more. With the weight of new environments, expectations, and unknowns, it’s our job as parents and caregivers to become their safe space, their cheerleader, their peace. Why Affirmations Matter Mental health is just as vital as physical health. While we often focus on academic readiness, learning sight words or multiplication tables, our children’s emotional readiness is equally important. Creating a home filled with love, encouragement, and reassurance sets the tone for how they face the world. When children are regularly affirmed, they are:

· More confident in their abilities · Less likely to seek external validation · Emotionally equipped to handle challenges

In our home, “I love you” is said multiple times a day. Not just in passing, but intentionally. I want my children to know without a doubt that they are deeply loved and believed in. Establishing a Peaceful Back-to-School Routine Back-to-school season can bring anxiety. New schools, new teachers, unfamiliar classmates, different bus routes, the uncertainty alone is enough to overwhelm even the most confident child. That’s why I encourage you to create a stress-free morning routine that works for your family. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but it should be intentional. In our home, our routine looks different each day due to our children’s age gap. But there’s one constant: prayer. No matter how chaotic the morning is, we always pause to speak life into our children. We cover them spiritually, emotionally, and mentally before they step out into the world. Scriptures That Ground Us As a military family, change is a frequent visitor in our lives. With every PCS move and new duty station, we face the unknown right alongside our children. But in the midst of it all, we turn to the Word to anchor our hearts. Here are a few verses we hold close: Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened; and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” This verse speaks directly to our family’s journey. Whether it’s a new school or a new city, we remind our children and ourselves that God is always with us. Isaiah 41:10 “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This is the verse I often cling to when navigating life with our autistic son. Change is difficult for him, and honestly, it’s difficult for me too. But my husband is quick to remind me: God’s got us. And He’s got our son too. Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” We take this verse to heart. It’s not just about discipline, it’s about legacy. When we model prayer, consistency, kindness, and faith, we’re setting the foundation for who our children will become. The Challenge: Start Today If your child hasn't started school yet, now is the perfect time to create a calm, empowering routine. If they’ve already begun, it’s not too late. Start today. Start with a simple “I love you.” Add a morning affirmation. Say a quick prayer together. Celebrate their wins: big or small. Let’s raise confident, grounded, and resilient children—one loving affirmation at a time. Because at the end of the day, our children don’t just need a full lunchbox or new shoes. They need to know that we believe in them, that we’re rooting for them, and that they are never alone. A Few Simple Affirmations to Get You Started:

· “You are brave, smart, and kind.” · “I believe in you.” · “You’re going to have a great day.” · “God made you amazing and don’t forget that.” · “You are never alone, Mommy and Daddy are always in your corner.”

Remember, the smallest compliment or affirmation can change how your child feels and how their entire day unfolds. A simple “I’m proud of you” or “You’ve got this” might be the very thing that carries them through a tough moment. Let’s continue to plant seeds of confidence, faith, and love, because our words matter, and our children are listening. Every family’s routine looks different, but what we all have in common is the desire to see our children thrive. I’d love to hear from YOU! What are some affirmations you speak over your children?
