Beauty for Ashes: The Need and Power of Affirmations

Beauty for Ashes: The Need and Power of Affirmations When Life Feels UnfairThere are days when life simply does not feel fair. Plans fall apart, emotions run high, and the inner critic gets loud. A couple of weeks ago I traveled to Woman Evolve carrying more weight than I wanted to admit. I felt overwhelmed and frustrated. After a short moment of self pity, I reached for what I know works. I began to affirm truth to my own heart. Then my closest friends stepped in. They let me be human, made me laugh, validated what I felt, and then spoke life. They reminded me this is a season, not a sentence. Their words reached and activated my heart. At Woman Evolve I received exactly what I needed. God met me in the sessions, the worship, the community. I gathered language and tools to hold on to, so I could shake off the doom and gloom and the negative voices the enemy would love for me to marinate in.Last night I facilitated a life group called Beauty for Ashes. We talked about God’s promise to give us beauty in exchange for the ashes of our lives, found in Isaiah 61. Some ashes come from things that were burned in the past. Some are the fresh residue of grief, transition, or disappointment. If we want to live in the promise of beauty, we have to give God our ashes and we have to speak life on purpose. That is where affirmations become powerful.Affirmations are not magic. They are alignment. They help our mouth, our mind, and our mood agree with what God says. They interrupt spirals, reframe pain, and train our focus toward hope. When we practice them consistently, they help us persevere, think clearly, and act with faith.Your Personal BullseyeTo see the promise of beauty, I teach a simple framework I call a personal bullseye. Three rings, one target. The target is the beautiful life God is forming in you.Ring 1: Internal, affirm and motivate yourselfThis is your private conversation with your soul. When discouragement knocks, you answer with truth. You are not pretending. You are practicing agreement with God. Speak to your identity, your assignment, and today’s next right step. Write it, speak it, repeat it.Try this:

Breathe in for four counts, breathe out for six counts, then say out loud three truths about God and three truths about you. Keep a list of go to affirmations on your phone. Use them morning, midday, and night. Pair each affirmation with a small action. Example: I choose peace today, then take a five minute walk.

Ring 2: Build a circle that can hold your humanityYou need friends who can sit with your ashes and still see your beauty. They will validate your feelings, then point you back to who you are in Christ. Give them permission to speak life when you forget. Let them pray with you and laugh with you. Healing loves safe community.Try this:

Choose two people you trust. Tell them what you are affirming this week and ask them to check in. When a friend vents, validate first, then ask a gentle question. What truth can we anchor to right now Celebrate small wins together. Text a praise report when God shows up.

Ring 3: Gather a circle of influence that teaches and equipsThis includes coaches, mentors, pastors, books, conferences, and classes that give you language and tools. Your circles of influence pour wisdom into you and keep your growth intentional. Woman Evolve did this for me. It reminded me to hold on to truth and keep moving. I actually have additional circles of teaching and growth influience.Try this:

Curate a learning list. Podcasts, sermons, books, and a class you will complete this month. Capture one quote or scripture from each source and turn it into a personal affirmation. Schedule learning like an appointment. Guard it. Growth requires rhythm.

Why Affirmations Work

They interrupt negative loops. Words direct attention. Attention directs action. They renew the mind. When you repeat truth, your brain begins to default to it. They align faith with action. You speak what God says and then step into it. They create endurance. On hard days, affirmations help you keep showing up.

How to Practice, even when you do not feel itOne Minute Reset Place a hand over your heart. Breathe. Say, God is with me. God is for me. God is in me. Then add one specific truth for your day.Write the exchange List today’s ashes on the left, such as grief, delay, fear. On the right, write the beauty God promises, such as comfort, timing, courage. Now write an affirmation that declares the exchange.Pair with Scripture Let the Word be your word supply. Isaiah 61 speaks of beauty for ashes, mourning into joy, heaviness into praise. Psalm 23 speaks of restoration. Romans 8 speaks of hope and victory. Turn verses into simple, present tense affirmations.Sample Affirmations for Overwhelm and Unfair Moments

God is my refuge and strength, I am held and helped. I receive beauty for ashes and joy for mourning. I am loved, chosen, and equipped for this season. God orders my steps, I take one faithful step today. Peace guards my heart and mind. I release control and receive God’s perfect timing. I break agreement with fear and agree with courage. My feelings are real, God’s truth is final. I am becoming stronger and wiser every day. God’s favor surrounds me like a shield. I carry light into every room I enter. God turns what was meant for harm into good. I forgive quickly and protect my joy. I rest in God’s presence and rise in God’s power. I speak life to my path and hope to my heart.

A Short PrayerFather, here are my ashes. I give you the places that feel unfair, heavy, and confusing. Exchange them for beauty. Exchange mourning for joy and heaviness for praise. Anchor my mind in your Word. Teach my mouth to agree with you. Surround me with friends and mentors who speak life. Strengthen me to take the next step with grace. In Jesus’ name, amen.A Simple Practice for the Week

Morning, speak three affirmations before you check your phone. Midday, text a friend one truth you are standing on. Evening, journal one beauty you witnessed today and one ash you are handing to God.

Final WordAffirmations do not deny pain. They direct it toward purpose. They do not erase ashes. They invite God to exchange them for beauty. When your inner voice is weary and life feels unfair, speak life, receive life, and live it. Your heart will catch up to your words, and your steps will follow your focus. Keep aiming for the bullseye. God is making something beautiful in you. And

Empowering you to evolve.
