Evolving in Confidence: Where I Got Mine From

Evolving in Confidence: Where I Got Mine From

I was recently asked a question during an interview about my life and business, and it made me pause in reflection. The question was simple, but deeply layered: Where did you get your confidence from?

Not how confident are you, but where did it come from.

I want to share my answer with you, and as you read, I invite you to think about your own story. Where did your confidence begin? Who helped shape it? What has tried to shake it? My hope is that, by the end, you will feel inspired to go on your own journey to evolve your confidence.

Where Did I Get My Confidence From?

The truth is, I was not always confident. As a little girl, I walked with my head down more often than I lifted it. I let what I lacked and what others thought of me shape how I saw myself.

I was motherless, my mother passed before I was three years old. I wasn’t raised by my father. I grew up in the hood, very skinny, and one of the darkest in my family. When you grow up without the steady assurance of a mother, rejection feels louder, and every slight feels heavier.

But even in that, God made sure I was not without love. I was blessed with a grandmother and aunts who affirmed me, loved me, prayed over me, and exposed me to life beyond where I lived. They introduced me to Jesus long before I fully understood Him. They taught me to take pride not only in how I looked but in my character, my mind, and the way I showed up in the world.

Growing Beyond Insecurity

As a child, I wrestled with insecurity, but as a teenager, I slowly began to outgrow it. I was surrounded by voices that reminded me of who I was and who God was shaping me to become. I joined dance, drill team, acting, and student government. Every stage, every performance, every leadership role taught me something new about my own ability.

In early adulthood, I began to realize that what I was taught at home could carry me further than I ever imagined. I discovered that I was smart, talented, capable, and created with purpose. And once I understood that, I developed a new level of confidence, even in the face of rejection!

I truly believed that if I wanted something, nothing could stop me if God was with me. I was taught to walk in love, to serve others, and to be honest. And as I learned more about God, I learned how He saw me. That was the game changer.

I could be confident because I was fearfully and wonderfully made.

Confidence Tested and Secured

There were times I had to act confident even when I didn’t feel it. But God kept proving Himself. He always brought the right people, opportunities, provision, and strength I needed. That built a solid foundation in me.

Provision produces security, and security builds confidence.

I’d love to say I’m confident every single day, but that wouldn’t be honest. Life has a way of chipping away at you in different seasons. But the difference now is this: when my confidence gets shaky, I don’t fall apart, fall at His feet.

My confidence is no longer rooted in my own strength but in His.

Rooted in the Constant One

So where did my confidence come from?

It was planted by family and friends, watered by experiences, shaken by life, and secured by God.

I am confident because He is constant. And on the days when I don’t feel enough, I lean on the One who always is.

Affirmation

I am confident because I am created, called, and covered by God. My confidence is not circumstantial; it is anchored in the One who never changes.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for being my steady foundation and my constant source of strength. Help me to see myself as You see me, fearfully and wonderfully made. Remind me that confidence rooted in You cannot be shaken by rejection, loss, or insecurity. Restore my boldness where it has been weakened, and help me to walk each day knowing I am enough because You are within me.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
