Red, White… and WHO?

A Faith-Fueled Reflection on America, Accountability & Action — Just in Time for the Fourth of July

Growing up, I was drawn to social justice, equality, government, and the law — not because I loved politics, but because I believed real change was possible when people like me were present and properly represented at every level. I saw firsthand what happens when minority communities are drained of resources… when schools are expected to produce excellence with crumbs… when microaggressions and outright racism go unchecked.

I teach my son that knowing history is essential — because when we fail to learn from it, we’re doomed to repeat it. And yet, here we are, in 2025, watching that very cycle unfold. Power structures, fueled by twisted theology and distorted patriotism, seem determined to drag America backward — not forward.

The hardest part? It feels like the systems designed to protect us — law, policy, leadership — are either paralyzed or complicit. So I have to ask:

“What in the red, white… and WHO is going on in America?”

We’ve been left dazed — not by the beauty of the stars on our flag, but by the gut punches to justice, compassion, and truth. Our flag should symbolize freedom, equity, and protection for all. But as Independence Day approaches, many of us are wondering — who’s truly standing guard over those ideals now?

We see rogue immigration officers snatching people from their lives. We see elected officials using ignorance, intimidation, and division as political tools. We see billionaires and corporations bending government to their benefit while everyday people struggle. It feels like America has lost its moral compass — and its heart.

But here’s the truth — and as believers, we must cling to it:

God sees all.

The Bible reminds us that “The eyes of the Lord are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3). Corruption may hide in boardrooms and backrooms, but it never hides from God.

Three Faith-Fueled Ways to Lead with Courage — Even When the Headlines Are Heavy:

1. Stay Rooted in God’s Truth — and Speak It Boldly.

Misinformation thrives when good people stay silent. As believers, we are called to be salt and light — to preserve what is good and shine light on what is hidden (Matthew 5:13-16). That starts in our homes and extends to our schools, churches, workplaces, and yes — even social media. Stand for truth, even when it’s uncomfortable.

2. Guard Your Heart — Protect Your Peace.

Proverbs 4:23 tells us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Don’t let bitterness, fear, or exhaustion consume you. Take care of your mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Rest, pray, unplug when needed. A burned-out believer cannot be a bold believer.

3. Show Up — Because Faith Without Works is Dead.

James 2:17 reminds us that faith requires action. Change doesn’t just happen in Washington — it happens in PTA meetings, city council forums, the ballot box, and everyday acts of advocacy. Support leaders with integrity. Vote your values. Mentor a young person. Pray for our nation — but also act.

A Word to Our Elected Officials & Power Brokers:

To those elected to lead — we see you, and more importantly, God sees you. You took an oath to uphold the Constitution — but as people of faith, we also expect you to uphold moral courage. We need leaders who will stand for righteousness, justice, and the common good — not buckle under pressure or cower to corruption. If you cannot lead with integrity, it’s time to step aside for those who will.

And to those in the shadows — the billionaires, business leaders, and political insiders misusing power for personal gain — hear this clearly:

You will be held accountable.

By voters. By the law. And by the God who sees everything done in secret. (Luke 12:2-3)

No amount of money or influence can shield the truth forever.

Here’s the bottom line:

We may be frustrated. We may feel powerless. But we are not helpless. We serve a God who sees, who judges righteously, and who empowers His people to be change-makers.

America has always been a work in progress. And while the system may be flawed, the dream of a better, more just nation — rooted in truth, compassion, and accountability — is still worth fighting for.

We don’t just wear red, white, and blue — we live it.

It’s time to live it with faith, courage, and action.
