Speak Life: The Power of Affirmations to Heal, Uplift, and Transform By Zykina Stewart When I was in high school, I was part of the Youth Suicide Prevention Club. We partnered with the local Youth Suicide Prevention Commission, and I remember attending one of their conferences like it was yesterday. At that conference, we were reminded of something so simple yet incredibly profound. They told us that one small act can make a life-changing difference for someone who feels unseen or unheard. Looking someone in the eye. Offering a genuine smile. Acknowledging their presence. Being kind. Engaging in conversation. These simple gestures might seem small, but to someone battling loneliness, depression, or hopelessness, they could literally be the lifeline that pulls them back from the edge. That truth has stayed with me all these years. And as I have grown into my role as a coach, author, and leader, I have seen it over and over again. Our words and actions carry weight. The things we say and do can either build someone up or tear them down. This is why affirmations are so important. They are more than just words. They are acts of hope, seeds of healing, and reminders that every life has value and purpose. The Silent Battles We Face Behind every smile, there is often a battle no one sees. Many of us carry silent burdens such as anxiety, depression, self-doubt, or feelings of unworthiness. According to the CDC, suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and rates have been steadily increasing over the last decade. These numbers represent more than statistics. They represent people we love including friends, family members, church members, and co-workers. They represent moments when someone felt unseen, unheard, and hopeless. As a coach, speaker, and believer in Christ, I have sat with countless individuals who have wrestled with negative self-talk, I call them mental blurbs. Blurbs like “I’m not enough,” “I’m a failure,” or “I’ll never overcome this” echo in their minds.

/ 5 But here is the truth: “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Proverbs 18:21 When negative words take root, they can crush our spirit. But when life-giving words are spoken, they can bring healing, clarity, and transformation. Why Affirmations Matter Affirmations are more than feel-good statements. They are declarations of truth, rooted in faith and intentionality. When we affirm what God says about us, we begin to renew our minds and shift our perspective. Here are three ways affirmations bring healing and hope: 1. They Rewire Our Thoughts Our brains are wired by repetition. Negative thoughts repeated over time become beliefs. Affirmations work the same way but in reverse. Speaking life-giving truths helps retrain our minds and create new thought patterns. Example: Instead of saying, “I’m a failure,” you declare, “I am equipped, capable, and called for purpose.” 2. They Anchor Us Spiritually Affirmations, when grounded in scripture, connect us back to God’s promises. They remind us that our identity is not found in our circumstances but in Christ. Example: “I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Psalm 139:14 3. They Build Daily Resilience Life will bring challenges, grief, and setbacks. Affirmations give us spiritual armor to face each day with strength and hope. Affirmations do not erase the storm, but they equip us to stand in the storm with confidence and faith. Affirming Others: Speaking Life Into Those Around You While affirmations are powerful when spoken over ourselves, they become even more transformative when we affirm others.

/ 5 So often, people are silently battling negative voices in their minds. Voices that tell them they are not enough, they are not loved, or that the world would be better off without them. Your words could be the light that breaks through their darkness. Make it a daily practice to speak life over others, affirming the good you see in them and calling out their potential. This is not about empty flattery, it is about reminding someone of their worth, value, and purpose. You never know how deeply someone might need to hear: • “You are important.” • “I see strength in you.” • “You are loved and needed.” • “God has a plan for your life.” These simple words might be the very thing that helps someone shift from an unhealthy, self-harming mindset to one filled with hope and healing. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11 When we choose to affirm others, we become vessels of God’s love and agents of change in a hurting world. My Journey to Affirmations A-Z When I wrote Affirmations A-Z: A Guide to Reclaiming the Authentic You, my heart was to create a practical, faith-based resource for people to use daily. Each letter of the alphabet represents a powerful word such as Abundance, Balance, Confidence, Dreams, and Empowerment paired with scripture, reflection questions, and journaling space. This book is not just about reading affirmations, it is about speaking them, writing them, and living them. It has helped many of my clients and readers overcome fear, self-doubt, and limiting beliefs while deepening their faith and confidence in who God created them to be. The 26-Day Affirmation Challenge To bring these affirmations to life, we created the 26-Day Affirmation Challenge.

/ 5 Each day, we focus on a different letter of the alphabet and the affirmation it represents. Participants engage by: • Posting their reflection in our private challenge group • Sharing their daily affirmation on social media to inspire others • Connecting with a community of people who are choosing to evolve, grow, and thrive This challenge is a reminder that you are not alone. Every post, every declaration, and every shared story becomes a ripple of hope, especially during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. It is more than a challenge. It is a movement to speak life and create a culture of hope. Coaching Takeaways: How to Use Affirmations to Support Your Mental Health Here are four practical steps you can take today: 1. Start Small, Stay Consistent Choose one affirmation to repeat in the morning and evening. Example: “God is for me, so who can be against me?”Romans 8:31 2. Write It, See It, Speak It Write your affirmation in a journal, place it on a sticky note where you will see it, and speak it out loud. This creates a cycle of reinforcement for your mind and spirit. 3. Speak Life Into Others Every day, intentionally affirm someone else. A simple word of encouragement can help someone see their worth and know that they are loved, valued, and needed. 4. Connect with Community Healing happens in community. Share your affirmations with a trusted friend, prayer partner, or group like our 26-Day Challenge. This creates accountability and reminds you that you are never alone in your journey. ---

/ 5 Final Thought: Your Words Have Power If you are feeling overwhelmed, unseen, or broken right now, I want you to know this: your life matters. God sees you, loves you, and has a purpose for you. Affirmations are one way to align your voice with His promises. As you speak life over yourself and into others, you open the door for transformation, healing, and renewed hope. This September, let us stand together and declare: "I am loved. I am valuable. I am not alone. My life has purpose." Join me in the 26-Day Affirmation Challenge and let us create a wave of life-giving words that bring light to the darkness and hope to the hurting.
