I've been wrestling with something lately, and I think it's time to be honest—not just with myself, but with you too.
As a coach, I spend my days helping others identify their goals, create actionable plans, and hold themselves accountable to the change they want to see. I equip people with strategies to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. But here's the truth I need to acknowledge: even as I coach others, I have to practice what I teach.
Right now, I'm facing my own gap. I need to prioritize my physical health. I know what needs to happen. I have the evidence from my past that change is possible—I've done it before. But in this season, I'm caught between the comfort of my current habits and the mental block that whispers, "It will take so much time." Wishful thinking, I've discovered, is not enough. It never is.
Seeing the Gap
There's something humbling about acknowledging your need for change. It requires you to look honestly at the distance between your reality and your ideal. That view isn't always pretty. For me, it means accepting that my eating habits have become comfortable routines rather than intentional choices. It means recognizing that I've been waiting to "feel ready" instead of taking action.
But here's what I'm learning: even the strongest leaders need help. Acknowledging that isn't weakness—it's wisdom. In fact, it's delusional to imagine that one day you'll just wake up and feel like making hard changes. Because courage isn't a feeling. It's an act of boldness.
The Path Forward
So what does change actually require? The same things I help my clients embrace:
A plan. Not a vague intention, but concrete steps that move you from Point A to Point B.
Action. Consistent, imperfect movement forward. Not waiting for motivation, but creating momentum.
Accountability. Someone or something to help you stay committed when your feelings lag behind your goals.
I'm setting my eyes on the reward waiting on the other side of this change. I'm remembering past victories to fuel my belief that this is possible. And I'm committing to being courageous—to going forward even when I know there will be moments I don't enjoy, truths I'll have to accept, and days when progress feels slow.
The Promise of Change
Here's what I know awaits me on the other side: I will become stronger. I will become healthier. I will increase my capacity. I will experience more fulfillment.
And this is true whether your goal is health-related or not. Maybe you're facing a career transition, a difficult conversation, a relationship that needs attention, or a dream you've been too afraid to pursue. The principles remain the same. The courage required is the same.
Change may be murky. It won't always be pretty. But if we commit to being courageous—to taking action even when we don't feel ready—we will get there.
So I'm acknowledging my need. I'm seeing the gap. I'm making a plan. I'm taking action. And I'm asking for accountability.
Because that's what change takes. Not wishful thinking. Not waiting for the perfect feeling. Just courage—the bold decision to move forward anyway.
